Bio: Yogacharini Dr. Sangeeta


Yogacharini Dr. Sangeeta Laura Biagi is a Raja and Nada Yoga Teacher in the tradition of Yogamahairshi Dr. Swami Gitananda Giri at Ananda Ashram/ICYER in India. Dr. Sangeeta is also a full time faculty in The Theatre School at DePaul University, and a storyteller. Her performance style and academic work is a blend of devised theater, yoga practices, and leadership training to hear and uplift people's voices. Dr. Sangeeta holds a Master of Arts and Ph.D. from the Department of Performance Studies at New York University, and is a graduate of the Sound Healing Program at the New York Open Center. In 2009, she moved to the Center for Yoga Education and Research in India, to study Raja and Nada Yoga, Sanskrit, and Carnatic Vocal Music in the tradition of Yogamaharishi Dr. Swami Gitananda Giri. After a 3,500 hour residential training, she received the titles of Yogacharini and Yogasadhaki. In 2012, she chanted in Yogacharya Dr. Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani’s recording "Chanting the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali,” and, in 2013, she co-wrote, with Dr. Bhavanani, the book Saraswati’s Pearls: Dialogues on the Yoga of Sound. Dr. Biagi explores all aspects of vocal production and reception, from deep listening to non-violent communication, from mantra chanting to vocal improvisation, from script analysis to dramatic writing. Her TED talk Reimagine Failure: Breathe, Belong, Believe, is a personal exploration of the power of words to shape the perception of reality, and gain authorship over one’s life story. She is an Instructor with the Inside/Out Prison Exchange Program and, since 2017, she has collaborated with the Steans Center at DePaul University and Cook County Jail (CCDOC) in Chicago to teach her academic course Healing Narratives: Uplifting Voices. She has consulted, collaborated with, and presented at prestigious institutions such as Vassar College, DePaul University, New York University, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Chicago Artist Coalition, Xavier University of Louisiana, and the New York Open Center. She is currently compiling her book Inviting the Medicine: Eight Steps to Refine Character.
